How You Can Help on Earth Day!

By: Julia Prendergast

Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd, 2020, and we’re in for an interesting one this year with us all being stuck inside. Here are a few tips on how to celebrate while social distancing:

Go Online

The organization that co-ordinates Earth Day on a global scale is the Earth Day Network – they’re taking their celebration online this year! On April 22nd, tune in to an online broadcast on earthday.org to learn more about the science behind climate change and hear from some amazing speakers (such as Al Gore and Zac Efron) from the comfort of your own home.

Speak Out

There are so many organizations and causes that need assistance throughout this time. If you’re in a position to help, why not donate to COVID-19 relief or to the Ottawa Food Bank! You could even gather up the kids for help making an Earth Day sign for your window, encouraging your neighbours to get involved.

You could also simply take in the beautiful nature (if the Ottawa weather permits) on a walk!

Educate!

NASA has came up with a 50th Anniversary Toolkit for Earth Day 2020, which includes various educational resources such as books, videos, visuals, and online interactive games. It’s perfect for you and the kids to do together!

If the kids get into it, you could also throw an Earth Day movie night, complete with all the environmental children’s classics: Wall-E, Madagascar, The Lorax.. The list goes on. There are so many great ways to stay involved during quarantine!
