A Celebration of Song

A Celebration of Song

Saturday, June 24th
7:30 – 10:00pm
Orpheus Musical Theatre
When Donna St-Jean’s mother Dianne was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 70, Donna was faced with the many painful challenges that come with a dementia diagnosis. In the midst of struggling to come to terms with this change, Donna reached out to The Dementia Society and was connected with a dementia care coach.

In Donna’s words:
“I could not have gotten through it without my dementia care coach. I had her number and could call her whenever I had questions, was unsure how to deal or just to vent. I learned so much about dementia and how to just BE with my mom. I learned how to talk to my mom and not at her in a way that could avoid stress for us both… I learned to enjoy being in the moment. I had access to tools, tips, tricks, information and research. I didn’t feel alone or lost. I firmly believe that The Dementia Society saved me from a breakdown.

Donna’s mother always loved to hear her sing. “I would also sing to her often when I would visit her. Even after she forgot who I was, I would sing and we would connect. She would sing the words with me. Music was the one pleasure she never lost even to the very end.”

Donna founded A Celebration of Song in her mother’s memory, and to raise awareness of and funds towards the support that we provide at The Dementia Society. We welcome you to join us next Saturday, June 24th for the 3rd edition of A Celebration of Song – a cabaret style evening of song featuring local artists, emceed by Ally Reid of 106.9 Jump FM. All proceeds from this event will be allocated towards our programs and services, ensuring that no one in Ottawa and Renfrew County faces dementia alone.
