You know all that plastic you put in the recycling bin every week? Did you know that only nine percent of it gets recycled?
Unfortunately until there’s something done about it, we’re going to keep seeing sad stories like this!
So, what are our other options? Of course the obvious is to get more of it recycled. The government can also step in and start banning single use plastics. But, there’s something you can do as an individual too!
Here’s 5 ways to cut down on the amount of plastic you use on a daily basis.
1. Stop using plastic straws
Restaurants and bars tend to give you a plastic straw before getting the chance to tell them otherwise! So, just make sure when ordering drinks to say you’re okay with no straw. If you’d prefer to use a straw, check out the alternatives in the below video!
2. Get rid of plastic water bottles
There’s a wide variety of reusable water bottles made of other materials like glass and stainless steel, so there’s no reason to continue to use plastic ones. A single person using a reusable, refillable water bottle instead of single-use plastic water bottles can save as much as 170 bottles from being produced each year.
3. Don’t use plastic sandwich bags
The average 8 to 12 year-old kid throws away about 67 pounds of lunch trash every year. Instead of packing your children’s sandwiches in plastic bags, try using reusable types made of cloth, beeswax or silicone. Check out the below video for other alternatives to plastic baggies!
Other ways to reduce the use of plastic in your daily life include…
- At the ice-cream shop, always choose a cone over a cup with a plastic spoon.
- Buy in Bulk.
- Use refill stations for detergents.
- Avoid excessive food packaging.
- Buy products sold in boxes instead of bottles.
- Make fresh squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic bottles.
