Last Wednesday was my 52nd birthday, and I’ll be celebrating all year by doing an activity that I’ve never done before every week for the next 12 months!
Just by reading the title you already know what my first new thing was, but let me give you a little context.
Back in January, for the first time ever, I bought my very own pair of ice skates! The last time I slapped any on was about 33 years ago, and the ones I used back then were skates that were passed down to me from an older sibling.
Shortly after getting said skates I received a letter from Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson reminding me that it’s my civic duty to skate down the Rideau Canal at least once. So, off me and my wife Stephanie went, on a beautiful February Saturday morning to experience the world’s largest skating rink!
The ice was a little soft, and there was slush in some places, but the weather more than made up for those shortcomings! We couldn’t have asked for a better day, with sunshine, a minus 5 temp, and no wind whatsoever!
While on the skateway, my wife and I were talking about how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful city, with so many awesome things to do, year around!
