"Skating through the Forest"

Family Day was perfect this year!  The weather was tailor-made for outdoor activity.  I dragged the kids out and we tried something that we’ve been meaning to do for a couple of years now.

One of our listeners (Brenda) has been talking up a place in Lac des Loups, Quebec, which is just a little NW of Wakefield (near all the ski hills).

It’s called “Patinage en Foret” or “Skating through the Forest.”

Here’s how it looks:

So thanks to Brenda for the passes, and we’ll be sure to go again.  The circuit is about 3kms long, but for less than $40 a family you can do as many circles as you have in you.  Snowshoeing is also a popular option.

If you’ve ever been in a pine forest after fresh snowfall, it’s amazing how quiet and peaceful that it can be.  The chickadee’s were out in full force, so tame that it seems like they’d like to land on your finger.  I felt just like Princess Fiona in SHREK!  Kinda, but not really.

The owner Dave Mayer (and his wife Monique) pay special attention to all the details; they have resisted playing music on loud speakers and, as of yet, have resisted the temptation of even installing a French Fry Truck, so that the exhaust won’t grease up the experience.

And they’ve also laid off the liquor licence too, but I can’t imagine a nicer spot to have a beer!  Hey, that’s how I celebrate stuff ok.

Dave says this has been a great winter.  This time last year, they had already shut down for the season, and if you believe in the advance forecast, they may just be skating in the Forest until March this year.

I am told that the “Torch Lit Friday Night” is a spiritual experience.
