Rideau Canal Skateway Re-Opens Friday

Bundle up this weekend and get your skates ready. This stretch of cold weather is what winter outdoor enthusiasts have been waiting for.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) announced on Thursday afternoon that 7.2 kilometres of the Rideau Canal Skateway (from the Laurier Bridge to the Hartwells Locks) will open at 8 AM on Friday morning. The NCC hopes to have the full canal open for skating before the end of the weekend.

The canal was closed late last Saturday due to unsafe ice conditions caused by temperatures going above the freezing mark and rainfall melting the ice. The NCC have been keeping an eye on the forecast and working on the ice since last weekends closure.

The forecast calls for sunny skies through the weekend, but temperatures will hover around -13 degrees with windchill values around -20. Make sure that you and your family are prepared for the conditions and of course, have fun!
