The 2018 holiday tech gift guide - part 1

Do you have a techie teen on your holiday shopping list? Is there a gadget guy or gal that you have to buy for this year?  Or do you want to buy yourself something cool?  If you answered yes to any of those questions, then read on because here’s my picks for some of the hottest tech that’ll be under Christmas trees this year!

Smart watches

A few years ago, these devices were kind of clunky, and slow, but the technology has gotten a lot better and smart watches are now well worth the money!  Of course the Apple Watch is still the crème de la crème of these gadgets.

But, if Apple’s latest model, the Series 4, (starting at $519) is a little too rich for your blood, you could always go back a generation, or pick one of the many Android alternatives.

Activity trackers

For those who can’t afford a smart watch, activity trackers are a great, less expensive option, which have some of the same functionality at half the cost.  Among this category of product, the best and most well known is Fitbit!

The hottest and newest Fitbit model is the Charge 3, which was just released and retails for $199.  If that one doesn’t do it for you, then take a look at the complete line of Fitbit products at this link or other brands of fitness trackers in the video below.

Smart speakers

There’s 3 major players in this product category; Amazon’s Echo, running the Alexa virtual assistant, Google Home devices, and the more expensive HomePod from Apple, which operates using Siri.  They’re all pretty much the same, with slight differences, but check out the below video for a performance comparison.

Smart Speakers are evolving to include screens too!  Canadians can purchase Amazon’s Echo Show, but the Home Hub from Google isn’t available in this country yet.

Wireless headphones

Headphones can be really expensive, and for that reason I’ve picked the best for the least amount of money in 2 categories.  Over, or on the ear traditional headphone, and the in-ear “bud” style.

Skullcandy Ink’d Wireless Earbuds – $65

Connected through Bluetooth, these lightweight headphones provide a really good sound and come in seven different colours.

Jabra Move Wireless Headphones – $98

These headphones feature a cool design and strong performance at a killer price. The Move Wireless are an excellent budget option!

Smart Home Devices

And finally, let’s end part 1 of my list of hot tech items for the 2018 holiday season with a category of products that’s been quickly growing in popularity over the last few years.

In the past you may have thought that these types of devices were financially out of reach, but they are a lot more affordable these days! For example…

I only just scratched the surface and have a lot more tech gift ideas to bring you next time so, come back for more of the hottest gadgets of 2018.
