As a human race in the 21st century, we waste a LOT of time on the Internet! There’s the non-stop scrolling through social media, an endless stream of cat videos, and of course window shopping for things we’ll never be able to afford!
If you’re afraid all that nonsense is giving you brain damage, and feel like you should actually be doing something productive online, I’m here to help with a handpicked list of some of the most useful sites on the World Wide Web.
#1 – IFTTT
If you want to make using the web easier, then this site is VERY useful for that! It’s basically an online recipe book which automates the services you use.
For a full explanation as to what it is and how If This Then That works, watch the video above. In short, IFTTT creates a chain between two or more things and makes them work together. For example, you could set it up to where you get an e-mail message anytime a certain Twitter hashtag is used. It also comes in handy for use with home automation.
#2 – IMDB
I promise that not all of these website will be initialisms, or ones that start with the letter ‘I.’
Besides Facebook, I think IMDB, (Internet Movie Data Base,) is one of my most visited websites. It’s settled numerous debates in my household, like who’s that actor in the TV show we’re watching, or what new movies are coming out this weekend. Of course you can also do things like watch trailers and get behind the scenes info. IMDB has been around for a long time too; since 1990!
#3 – Snopes
In this age of “fake news” we live in, Snopes.com is an invaluable tool! I’ve used it many times to debunk misinformation being spread on social media!
It was one of the first online fact-checking websites, and has been found to be a “well-regarded source for sorting out myths and rumors” on the Internet. In 2012, FactCheck.org reviewed a cross section of articles on Snopes and found them to be free from bias in all cases.
#4 – Google
I tried thinking of a more useful website than Google, but there really isn’t one! It’s become so ingrained in our everyday life that I would be remiss in my duties as a tech blogger not to mention it!!
And of course Google isn’t JUST a website! They provide countless services. In the past week I’ve used Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Maps, YouTube, GPay, Photos, News, Play, Search and Android. So, to say I’m entrenched in the Googleverse would be an understatement.
Just a few more websites that I find useful include…
And finally, I thought it would be appropriate end this blog with a picture of Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web, because without him, we would not have all these amazing digital destinations!
