WATCH: Fans Set Fire in Stands at TD Place During Ottawa Fury/Toronto FC Soccer Match

Wednesday night’s Canadian Championship semi-final match between Ottawa Fury FC and Toronto FC had to be halted in the second half due to a fire in the North stands.

Reports are saying that a small group of fans in the Toronto FC supporters section lit road flares in the stands causing the fire and a small but loud explosion. Some of the fire also caused damage to a section of the TD Place playing surface.

The fire was put out quickly and there were no reported injuries.

Fury FC supporter described the scene at TD Place when the fire in the stands broke out…

The Ottawa Fury FC twitter feed posted this little jab at those supporters…

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) is working with Ottawa Police on the investigation.

As a sports fan and someone who spends a lot of time at TD Place and other stadiums very frequently, I’m all for being into the game, no matter if you’re cheering for the home team or road team, no matter what the sport. However, causing damage to a building, simply because it’s not your home team’s park and putting fans, players and event staff at risk is ABSOLUTELY STUPID, IGNORANT and IRRESPONSIBLE. That kind of behavior isn’t welcome anywhere.

Fury FC fans, please don’t blame all fans of Toronto FC for what happened on Wednesday night. Remember, every team has a group of idiots in their fan base. It’s the fun, happy, passionate and responsible fans that help make the games and atmosphere great.

The two teams will meet up again next Wednesday at Toronto’s BMO Field, with Toronto FC leading 1-0 on aggregate.
